RAMONA wrapped her arms around her stomach and rocked back and forth on the living room couch. On the television screen in front of her, credits rolled, and eerie background music filled the room.

She had just finished watching The Specter.

She took a deep breath that quivered going in and out, and she put one hand on her chest. She blinked. She tried not to think about what she’d just seen, but parts of The Specter—parts she couldn’t stop seeing—played again and again in her head.

She needed to speak, to say something. Even though she was home alone, she needed to fill the silence with words.

Words always helped. Words would chase the eeriness away. They would break the strange spell The Specter seemed to have cast over her. So she opened her mouth, and she named the feelings inside her.

“Shaky,” she said, but her feelings didn’t change.

“Nervous,” she said. Still nothing happened.

She stopped the movie. The room fell quiet.

She turned her head from side to side. Then, in the silence, she found the right word.

“Afraid.”

She waited, but even the right word didn’t help. It didn’t chase the feelings inside her away. It just made everything more…real.

“Afraid,” she said again.

The back of her neck went cold.
